About Cowgirl

Winemaking Team

Although he has little experience wranglin’ cows on the Ranch, our honorary Cowboy Damien Georis sure knows his way around a vineyard! Damien studied Agricultural Engineering at the University of Gembloux in Belgium, after which he received the French National degree of Enology from the University of Bordeaux in 2000. He has since trained at Chateau Léoville-Las-Cases in the Saint-Julien appellation and Chateau Nénin on the Right Bank of the Bordeaux region, eventually becoming the winemaker at Chateau Nénin. Following this, Damien was the winemaker at Chateau Olivier in the Pessac-Léognan appellation for five years.

History

Cowgirl Winery is a tribute to the ranch town that Carmel Valley used to be, and if you look closely still is. Paying tribute to the women who ran ranches, rode horses, and tended to the herd - but most importantly raised families and built communities.

Founder and creator Walter Georis is a visionary, an artist and creator and a successful entrepreneur. He takes great pride in his work and in his community, he has an artful approach to each endeavor, bringing old-world European charm to modern, forward thinking creations. Co-owner Sylvia Georis embodies the true Cowgirl spirit and is what we Cowgirls call “The woman behind the man”. Sylvia’s hand in the creation of Cowgirl is greatly visible in the feminine touches starting with the clever design through the handpicked boutique of retail items. With a great appreciation for the land, and the earth Walter and Sylvia started their Carmel Valley Georis vineyard in the early 80’s. Georis Winery flourished, making European style wines, with a great sense of style. Cowgirl was born as a sister label to Georis in 2011 and opened it’s Tasting Room doors in 2012
